Crave Salt?

Salt cravings may be your body’s way of dealing with STRESS. 

Salt has such a bad reputation, but did you know that salt is an effective way to naturally decrease cortisol aka stress levels?  I want you to know the best type and amount that can actually really help you feel better without hindering your health. 

Unfortunately table salt is stripped of the good minerals your body needs and only leads to craving even more salt.  On the other hand, adding in real salt like high quality Himalayan or Sea Salt is a great way to actually get in the minerals your body really needs and craves.  I have linked some of my favorites in here.

1. Choose high quality Himalayan Pink Salt or Sea Salt because it has trace minerals like potassium that help us regulate fluid balance and get rid of water retention, magnesium to help us calm down and sleep well, and calcium for stronger bones and less PMS.   Himalayan Pink Salt 

2. Salt is important for our nervous system to function and for muscle contractions.  It is important to maintain the fluid balance inside and outside of our cells for optimal nerve function and communication.  Healthy salt can help your brain to effectively communicate to the rest of your body, which is one reason why a lack of sodium can cause muscle cramps.  

3. Table salt has a bad reputation because it can cause high blood pressure and water retention, but I don’t want you to avoid salt all together.  I just recommend avoiding table salt because it has been processed, contains additives, has been bleached, and lacks essential minerals.  Salt is still so important and crucial for our body to function optimally. Pink salt is a healthier alternative without causing those unpleasant side effects and still providing all the health benefits.  

4. Table salt can cause cravings for more and more salt and can lead to overeating. Upgrading your salt can ironically stop salt cravings. It can leave you feeling more satisfied and in turn stop the overeating cycle. When our foods are missing the key nutrients they should have, our bodies don’t always get the signals to stop eating.  

5. Hydrochloric acid is your friend. Do you suffer with heart burn, bloating, gas, belching, skin problems, constipation, diarrhea, undigested food in your stool, acne, or nutrient deficiencies? These are a list of symptoms that can happen when we are low in hydrochloric acid. Instead of popping more tums, make sure you are consuming the right amount of healthy salt.  Salt helps your body produce hydrochloric acid, which mean you will optimize your digestion and feel better. Hydrochloric acid is also our defense against parasites, bacteria, and unwanted pathogens, so it is an important part of keeping our body healthy and strong.

 

Quick Tips

  • A little bit goes a long way. 
  • Extra fine Himalayan Pink Salt is my personal favorite.
  • I like to add a pinch to my green juice, salad dressing, roasted vegetables, and on my avocado. 
  • Read the ingredient label and choose products with sea salt not salt.  I even upgraded my Dijon mustard to a different brand that used sea salt instead of table salt.
  • Choose restaurants that cook with real salt.
